How It Works
- Current value of selected asset categories (prediction-enabled only)
- Expected annual returns for each asset
- Monthly recurring contributions to each asset
- Total remaining balance of selected debts as the target
- Month-by-month compound growth simulation
Key Assumptions
- 1Expected returns remain consistent over time
- 2Monthly contributions continue at current levels
- 3Debt balances are treated as a static target (current balance)
- 4Assets grow independently (no portfolio rebalancing)
- 5Debt is not included in the growth calculation — only assets grow
Mathematical Approach
The prediction runs a month-by-month simulation. Each month, for each asset: New Value = Current Value + (Current Value × Monthly Return) + Monthly Contribution The simulation continues until: Total Asset Value ≥ Total Debt Balance If assets already cover the debt, the result shows immediate coverage with the surplus amount.
Important Limitations
- Debt balance is treated as a snapshot (doesn't model ongoing debt payments)
- Market volatility not considered
- Does not account for debt interest accruing over time
- Results show financial capacity, not necessarily the optimal payoff strategy
Important: This prediction shows when you'll have the financial capacity to pay off debts, not necessarily when you should. The optimal debt payoff strategy depends on interest rates, tax situations, and personal financial goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "Debt Covered" mean?
It is the moment your investments could, in principle, pay off all your selected debts at once — when total asset value grows to meet or exceed your total outstanding debt balance.
Is reaching Debt Covered the same as being debt free?
No. Debt Covered shows financial capacity — you could clear the debt if you chose to. Whether you should depends on interest rates, taxes, and your goals; the Debt Free and Invest vs. Pay Down Debt predictions look at those questions.
